LDS Missions in the United States

There are currently 133 active missions in the United States. Explore where each one is based, the local time zones, the climate and what to do next if you have been called there.

United States with each mission's base city marked. Markers show where missions are based, not the areas they cover — the Church does not publish mission boundaries as map data, and missionaries serve across areas set by the mission. Honolulu and Laie fall outside this outline and are not marked; those missions are in the list below.

About LDS missions in the United States

There are currently 133 active LDS missions based in the United States, in 116 cities across 45 states. Some cities carry more than one: Salt Lake City (5), Dallas (4) and Houston (4), among others. Those cities are spread about 8,150 km (5,050 miles) from Laie in the west to Boston in the east and about 4,500 km (2,800 miles) from Anchorage in the north to Honolulu in the south.

2 missions are based in the national capital, Washington, D.C. Mission cities range from near sea level at Charleston (2 m / 7 ft) to Flagstaff at 2,108 m (6,916 ft).

Missionaries serve across areas set by their mission, which can reach well beyond the city the mission is based in, and they are transferred between those areas during a mission.

Time zones used by missions in the United States

Missions in the United States keep 11 different time zones, so the right hour to write depends on which mission you are following. The clocks below are live, and follow daylight saving wherever it applies.

Missionary Tracker shows this clock next to your missionary, so nobody at home has to work out whether it is a reasonable hour to write.

Climate and seasons in the United States

Mission cities in the United States fall into 13 Köppen climate classes, so conditions are not the same across the country.

The most common are humid subtropical (Cfa), covering 39 missions including Atlanta and Austin, hot-summer humid continental (Dfa), covering 26 missions including Boston and Chicago and cold semi-arid (BSk), covering 13 missions including Albuquerque and Boise.

Across those cities, the warmest monthly average high is 41 °C (106 °F) in Phoenix during July, and the coolest monthly average low is -18 °C (0 °F) in Bismarck during January.

Always use your Missionary Portal and your mission’s own “what to bring” instructions when deciding what clothing or equipment to pack. This describes the weather, not what to take.

Languages

The languages most widely used across the United States are English and Spanish.

This describes the country, not the assignment. The language a missionary is called to speak is set by the Church and stated in the call itself — it can differ from the languages above, and missionaries serving in the same country are not always assigned the same one.

Preparing to serve in the United States

If you have received a mission call to the United States, begin with the instructions in your Missionary Portal and the mission’s own letter — those are the only sources that speak for your mission. These guides cover the practical side nobody sends you: the paperwork, the shopping, the packing and the last weeks at home.

Visa and travel arrangements for the United States are handled through your Missionary Portal and the Church’s travel office. Follow their instructions rather than any third-party summary, including this one.
