About LDS missions in Canada
There are currently 8 active LDS missions based in Canada, in 7 cities across 6 regions. Some cities carry more than one: Toronto (2). Those cities are spread about 4,450 km (2,750 miles) from Vancouver in the west to Halifax in the east and about 2,700 km (1,700 miles) from Edmonton in the north to Toronto in the south.
Every mission city is north of the tropics, so June to August is summer and December to February is winter. Mission cities range from near sea level at Halifax (60 m / 197 ft) to Calgary at 1,042 m (3,419 ft).
Missionaries serve across areas set by their mission, which can reach well beyond the city the mission is based in, and they are transferred between those areas during a mission.
Time zones used by missions in Canada
Missions in Canada keep 5 different time zones, so the right hour to write depends on which mission you are following. The clocks below are live, and follow daylight saving wherever it applies.

Climate and seasons in Canada
Mission cities in Canada fall into 2 Köppen climate classes, so conditions are not the same across the country.
The most common are warm-summer humid continental (Dfb), covering 7 missions including Calgary and Edmonton and temperate oceanic (Cfb), covering 1 mission including Vancouver.
Across those cities, the warmest monthly average high is 27 °C (81 °F) in Montreal during July, and the coolest monthly average low is -23 °C (-10 °F) in Winnipeg during January.
Warm-summer humid continental (Dfb)
Warm summers and cold, snowy winters, with precipitation in every month.

Temperate oceanic (Cfb)
Mild summers, cool rather than severe winters, and rain in every month.

Always use your Missionary Portal and your mission’s own “what to bring” instructions when deciding what clothing or equipment to pack. This describes the weather, not what to take.
Languages
The languages most widely used across Canada are English and French.
- English
- French
This describes the country, not the assignment. The language a missionary is called to speak is set by the Church and stated in the call itself — it can differ from the languages above, and missionaries serving in the same country are not always assigned the same one.
Preparing to serve in Canada
If you have received a mission call to Canada, begin with the instructions in your Missionary Portal and the mission’s own letter — those are the only sources that speak for your mission. These guides cover the practical side nobody sends you: the paperwork, the shopping, the packing and the last weeks at home.
