LDS Missions in Brazil

There are currently 40 active missions in Brazil. Explore where each one is based, the local time zones, the climate and what to do next if you have been called there.

Brazil with each mission's base city marked. Markers show where missions are based, not the areas they cover — the Church does not publish mission boundaries as map data, and missionaries serve across areas set by the mission.

About LDS missions in Brazil

There are currently 40 active LDS missions based in Brazil, in 30 cities across 19 regions. Some cities carry more than one: São Paulo (5), Curitiba (2) and Fortaleza (2), among others. Those cities are spread about 2,800 km (1,750 miles) from Manaus in the west to João Pessoa in the east and about 3,200 km (2,000 miles) from Belém in the north to Porto Alegre in the south.

The Brazil Brasília Mission is based in Brasília, the national capital. Every mission city is south of the equator, so the calendar seasons run the opposite way to the northern hemisphere: December to February is summer and June to August is winter. Mission cities range from near sea level at Salvador (4 m / 13 ft) to Brasília at 1,136 m (3,727 ft).

Missionaries serve across areas set by their mission, which can reach well beyond the city the mission is based in, and they are transferred between those areas during a mission.

Time zones used by missions in Brazil

Missions in Brazil keep 8 different time zones, so the right hour to write depends on which mission you are following. The clocks below are live, and follow daylight saving wherever it applies.

Missionary Tracker shows this clock next to your missionary, so nobody at home has to work out whether it is a reasonable hour to write.

Climate and seasons in Brazil

Mission cities in Brazil fall into 6 Köppen climate classes, so conditions are not the same across the country.

The most common are tropical savanna (Aw), covering 13 missions including Brasília and Cuiabá, humid subtropical (Cfa), covering 12 missions including Campinas and Florianópolis and tropical rainforest (Af), covering 5 missions including Belém and Manaus.

Across those cities, the warmest monthly average high is 36 °C (97 °F) in Teresina during October, and the coolest monthly average low is 8 °C (46 °F) in Curitiba during July.

Always use your Missionary Portal and your mission’s own “what to bring” instructions when deciding what clothing or equipment to pack. This describes the weather, not what to take.

Languages

Portuguese is the language most widely used across Brazil.

This describes the country, not the assignment. The language a missionary is called to speak is set by the Church and stated in the call itself — it can differ from the languages above, and missionaries serving in the same country are not always assigned the same one.

Preparing to serve in Brazil

If you have received a mission call to Brazil, begin with the instructions in your Missionary Portal and the mission’s own letter — those are the only sources that speak for your mission. These guides cover the practical side nobody sends you: the paperwork, the shopping, the packing and the last weeks at home.

Visa and travel arrangements for Brazil are handled through your Missionary Portal and the Church’s travel office. Follow their instructions rather than any third-party summary, including this one.
